The Stray Cat and Jesus

We all know the rules, if a stray cat shows up at your door you, 1. do not give it attention, 2. do not feed it, and 3. do not give it a name.  So when a stray literally knocked on my door last year I followed the rules... well, sort of.

It was a cold winter night when this gray tabby showed up.  At first we ignored it or shooed it away, telling it to go back where ever it came from.  But it stayed, persistently perched on our steps.  After a few days we gave in and started giving it just a little attention... but no food!  Then after a couple of weeks of this cat scratching at the door, being all alone out in the cold, we gave in again and gave it some food, well we couldn’t let it starve.  We were hoping that eventually this cat would find its way back to its home, or at least to another one, but this cat was determined to make this her place.

Her persistence and patient behavior reminded me of Jesus. (yes, most things remind me of Jesus in one way or another.)

Jesus in a way, was a stray.  He was rejected by his own people, wondered, and was basically homeless.  He himself said, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”  (Matt 8:20)

Just as the cat waited so patiently for us to let her in, Jesus awaits the same, for the day we decide to give Him a little attention, then a little more, feed Him, and let Him in.

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”  - Jesus (Revelation 3:20)

Is Jesus the stray knocking at your door, have you let him in yet?  Is He now at home and a part of your family?  Jesus is knocking, don't shoo Him away, like you would the stray cat.

Finally after months her patience and determination payed off, we did allow the cat inside and this did become her home.  Funny though, we still have not broken rule #3, after  a year living with us, we still have not given the cat a name.
