The Duty of an Artist

"To send light into the darkness of men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist." - Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann was a composer, and when he said this, he was likely referring to his own craft - music.  And he was also likely speaking of sending light into the darkness of men's hearts, in the emotional sense rather than a spiritual sense, but this statement completely sums up what many Christian artists know to be true.  It is our duty to send the Light of the Gospel into the darkness of men's hearts, through our artwork.

Whatever our medium, whether it be visual arts, performing arts, or music, we do connect with an audience on an emotional level.  As men and women open their hearts to the art, the artist has an opportunity to bear witness to the joy, hope, love and salvation that we receive from the Lord.  The Christian artist testifies with each piece of creative work.

To send light into the darkness of men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist.  This could be our mission statement, this could be our battle cry.  It is our duty as Christians to glorify God in all that we do.  When you begin your next masterpiece, keep this quote in mind.  Our creativity is a service to the Lord, a service to reach others, and bring them out of darkness into His marvelous light.
